Music at NIS

For many years Nelson Intermediate has been renowned for its student centred music programme, where students can elect to learn one or more musical instruments while at school.

Professional tutors specialising in all areas of instrumental music come and teach at school - which has lead to success in competitive musical events such as Bandquest.

With its focus on ensemble performance the programme provides initial individual instruction culminating in the formation of duos, trios and bands, and a unique guitar orchestra. There is also a school choir open to all students with no fee charged.

It is well documented that learning a musical instrument is key to developing self esteem and all the satisfaction that creating music brings. Playing in bands develops a sense of empathy, unity, listening and social skill.  Our students love this feeling of belonging and it is with a great sense of pride that we watch their development.

Nelson Intermediate now embraces the world of music producers with our well equipped digital studio. Students can learn song writing, studio production and even stage lighting so that when we give our popular lunchtime concerts they are run entirely by the students themselves!

The year culminates in professional recordings of the students and their work.

Payment must be paid before enrolment closes on Friday 5th of April at 5 pm to be placed in lessons.

An email will be sent home confirming the tutor and time of the lesson before the start of the term.
